Working in Devon
Local builders and groundworkers serving Devon
We work out of North Treviddo Farm, Horningtops, Liskeard, PL14 3PS, which keeps Devon inside our normal working area for site visits, plant movements and day-to-day supervision.
From our base at Horningtops near Liskeard we work across Devon as far as Exeter, Tavistock, Plymouth and the South Hams, Okehampton, Lifton, Holsworthy, Ivybridge, Totnes, Newton Abbot and the Dartmoor fringes, as well as the villages on the Devon bank of the Tamar.
Devon's building stock is varied and often old: cob and stone farmhouses and cottages, Victorian and Georgian terraces and villas in the towns, extensive post-war and modern housing around Plymouth and Exeter, and a great deal of agricultural building across the farming country. Each of those brings a different founding, drainage and structural picture.
Our Devon work covers groundworks and foundations, bulk earthworks and site preparation, mains and private drainage, concrete bases, agricultural slabs and access tracks, extensions and structural alterations, barn conversions, retaining walls and cut-and-fill on sloping ground, refurbishments, and complete new builds run from first dig to sign-off.
Being a Cornwall-based contractor working regularly across the border means we are used to dealing with different local authorities for planning and building control, and we handle that side for you on notifiable work. It also means we are honest about travel: the further the site, the more that affects mobilisation, and we say so at quote stage rather than letting it show up as a problem later.

Why clients in Devon use CC Construction Ltd
Verified cover, real local experience and one person answerable for the job from start to finish.
Cross-border working as standard
Devon work is a normal part of our patch, not an occasional excursion. We deal with the relevant local authority for planning and building control on notifiable work so you are not left coordinating it.
Rural and agricultural capability
Tracks, slabs, yards, private drainage and earthworks on farms need the right plant, stone and sequencing. CPCS-ticketed operators, SMSTS site management and a team of 15–25 people make that straightforward.
Old buildings handled carefully
Cob and stone properties on shallow footings need staged, propped and inspected work. Twenty years of doing exactly that means fewer surprises and less remedial work.
Insured, warranted and clearly priced
£5 million public liability, £10 million employers' liability, Contractors' All Risks cover, structural warranty available on new builds, and quotes on a fixed price, cost-plus or labour-only basis.
Local conditions
Problems we see regularly in Devon
Ground, weather, access and building age vary hugely across Cornwall and Devon. These are the issues that come up most often in and around Devon.
Cob construction and moisture
Cob walls need to breathe and need their feet kept dry. Cement renders, raised external ground levels and blocked drainage cause serious damage. Repairs have to respect how the wall works, and the groundworks around it matter as much as the wall itself.
High rainfall and heavy subsoil
Much of Devon is wet with slow-draining subsoil. Excavations fill, platforms soften and soakaways underperform. We drain positively, build stone platforms and programme earthworks realistically.
Rock and granite on the Dartmoor fringes
Foundations and drainage runs meeting rock need breaking allowances and sometimes redesigned depths. It is anticipated in the method and the price, not discovered later.
Private drainage past its service life
Rural Devon relies heavily on private systems, many undersized, silted or wrongly sited. Replacement needs proper design, siting and sign-off, all of which we handle on notifiable work.
Long accesses and construction traffic
Narrow lanes and long farm drives limit lorry sizes and suffer under loaded traffic. We size vehicles to the access, agree tipping points and price making the access good where the works will damage it.
How we work
How a job in Devon runs
The same five stages on every project, whether it is a concrete base or a complete new build.
Step 1
Free site visit
Calum comes out to the property himself, walks the ground with you and looks at access, levels, existing drainage and where plant can realistically get in. There is no charge for the visit and no obligation afterwards.
Step 2
Scope and written quote
You get a written quote that sets out what is included, what is excluded and how the work will be sequenced. We price fixed price, cost-plus or labour-only, whichever suits the job and how you want to buy it.
Step 3
Approvals and programme
On notifiable work we handle the building control side and can put planning applications in for you. Once approvals are in place we agree a start date, a programme and any stage payments. A deposit is not normally required.
Step 4
Work on site
Our own team of 15–25 people carries out the work, with CPCS-ticketed plant operators and SMSTS site management. Where specialist trades are needed we bring in vetted subcontractors that Calum manages directly, so you still deal with one contractor.
Step 5
Inspection, sign-off and handover
Levels, falls and drainage runs are checked before anything is covered up, building control inspections are booked at the right stages, and the site is cleared down before handover. On new builds a structural warranty can be arranged.
FAQs
Devon questions, answered
Cost, timings, coverage and cover, the things people in Devon ask before booking a site visit.
Do you work in Devon?
Yes. We cover Devon as far as Exeter, including Tavistock, Plymouth, the South Hams, Okehampton, Holsworthy, Ivybridge and the Dartmoor fringes.
How quickly can you reach a Devon site?
Nearer sites such as Tavistock and Plymouth are straightforward; sites towards Exeter take longer and we are upfront about that. Call 07770 946179 and Calum will arrange a free site visit and written quote.
What does building work cost in Devon?
Ground conditions, access, design and specification set the cost. We assess on site, then price fixed price, cost-plus or labour-only with inclusions and exclusions stated in writing.
Can you deal with a different council for planning and building control?
Yes. We work with the relevant local authority, manage building control and inspections on notifiable work and can submit planning applications on your behalf.
Do you take on agricultural work in Devon?
Regularly: yard slabs, bases, access tracks, drainage and earthworks, with the insurance and tickets that agricultural and commercial clients ask to see.
Can you work on a cob or stone property?
Yes, and carefully. Staged propped excavation, appropriate materials and getting external ground levels and drainage right are all part of doing it properly.
Is emergency availability offered in Devon?
We are not a 24-hour call-out service. Urgent problems are attended as quickly as travel and our current programme allow, within our hours of Monday to Saturday, 7:30am to 6:00pm.
Do you require a deposit?
Not normally. Larger projects are usually arranged with stage payments agreed in writing before work starts.
Are you insured for work in Devon?
Yes, £5 million public liability, £10 million employers' liability, products liability and Contractors' All Risks cover for contract works, our own and hired-in plant, and employees' tools.
Which Devon areas do you work in most?
Tavistock, Plymouth, the Tamar valley villages and Okehampton most often, and we take work across Devon as far as Exeter.
